Issue 43

"Regretfully, people who don't garden say gardeners are peculiar, so I would only tell this story to all of you.
One day I had a doctor appointment, and it was pelting with rain. As I got out of my car, I noticed the parking lot was almost covered with wet stranded earthworms, which were being squashed by the dozen every time another car drove in. I started to collect them, filling all the empty coffee cups from the floor of my car. I collected and collected-- until I was soaked through, and almost oblivious of the people in smart suits, carrying umbrellas, who looked at me strangely as they passed. No one offered to help. I don't think my doctor understood, either, when I begged her to organize the building to come out and save worms. She nodded sweetly, but said she would start the rally later.
Readers of
