Issue 44

"I suddenly know I'll never be a greenhouse grower, a plant farmer--at least not like my father. Maybe my own son will--it's certainly in Aidan's genes--but this passion for plants has skipped a generation. Who can say why? Why do we become what we become, different from or the same as our parents? All I know is that our fates were revealed that February night more than 20 years ago, when we worked side by side, my father bent over his plants, my own head bent over a book. It's a moment that stands frozen in time, as some childhood memories do. Each of us was doing what he loved best. And that's all that can be asked of anyone, if we hope to live our lives without regret."
