Issue 49

"A clerk--they do still have those although they are sparse--evidently noticed this befuddled-looking person staring at things over her half glasses. She came up and asked if she could help me. She was a young snippet of a thing, all angles and sharp joints. It looked as though she'd break at one of them like an asparagus sprout if she got into a strong wind. I told her I was looking for galoshes. She didn't say a word. Her eyes sort of narrowed as she stared at me. Then she said she thought I must have the wrong department. I said I didn't think so, but I didn't see any galoshes. She looked at me as if I were talking about Hungarian stew. So I spelled it out: g-a-l-o-s-h-e-s. Nothing. Blank. Clueless."
