Issue 56

"Suddenly, I felt a need to be outdoors, a need that sent me to the garden. Over the eastern mountain ridge, fingers of red massaged the sky. All around, creatures of day began to stir. I sat on the silvered bench tucked beneath the lilacs and pulled my feet under me. High above a wren sang. The first sunrays lit the hillside rock garden in a soft Alleluia of light. Peace wrapped around me, and I felt the presence of my mother beside me. Words, like a melody of dawn, touched my mind. 'A garden grows beautiful and strong, a joy to all, because of the gardener who grew it and cared for it, who loved it and tended to its needs. A family is much the same.' So it is, Mom. So it is. I didnšt take the job."
