Five of us worked on Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul for two years. We read over 5,000 stories, edited 500, voted it down to 160, then bound them up in booklets, sent them out to 40 volunteer readers, and asked them to rate each story on a scale of 1 to 10. The 101 highest-ranked stories made the book. So I believe I am justified in saying that Chicken Soup for the Gardener’s Soul is the best collection of garden stories ever!
A Vietnam veteran tells how yelling at his plants taught him how to talk to people again. A grandfather helps a little boy who wants to grow . . . doughnuts! A poor depression-era woman who pays a dime for her neighbor’s irises but never moves them because “I just wanted to own something that beautiful.” And 98 more!
