Visiting American Rose Gardens and Festivals

There’s nothing quite like the sight and scent of a blooming rose garden to lift your spirits. Lucky for us, the United States is home to some truly spectacular rose gardens and festivals that are sure to delight the senses. So, grab your camera and your walking shoes and let’s embark on a rosy adventure across America!

 

The Huntington Library: San Marino, California

Nestled in the picturesque city of San Marino, The Huntington boasts one of the most renowned rose gardens in the country. With over 1,200 varieties of roses, including rare and historic specimens, this 12-acre garden is a paradise for rose lovers. Stroll through winding pathways lined with vibrant blooms, and be sure to visit during peak blooming season in Spring for an unforgettable experience.

 

Brooklyn Botanical Garden: Brooklyn, New York

While this urban oasis is home to a diverse array of plant collections, including the iconic Cherry Esplanade, it’s the Cranford Rose Garden that steals the show for rose aficionados. Featuring over 5,000 rose bushes representing nearly 1,400 varieties, this garden is a kaleidoscope of colors and fragrances that will transport you to floral paradise.

 

International Rose Test Garden: Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon is home to the International Rose Test Garden. Established in 1917, this historic garden serves as a testing ground for new rose varieties and is known for its stunning panoramic views of the city and Mount Hood. With over 10,000 rose bushes representing more than 650 varieties, it’s no wonder this garden has earned the nickname “The City of Roses.”

 

Portland Rose Festival: Portland, Oregon

In Portland, you can also celebrate all things rosy at the annual Portland Rose Festival. Held every June, this beloved event pays homage to Portland’s nickname “The City of Roses” with a week-long extravaganza of parades, concerts, and, of course, plenty of roses. Highlights include the Grand Floral Parade, where elaborate floats adorned with thousands of fresh flowers wind their way through the city streets, and the Rose Garden at Washington Park, which showcases award-winning roses from around the world.

 

Butchart Gardens: British Columbia, Canada

In beautiful British Columbia, Canada, we find ourselves in the lush beauty of Butchart Gardens. While this site is not in the United States, this Canadian gem is too spectacular to leave off our list. With its stunning display of roses, including a dedicated Rose Garden showcasing a diverse collection of modern and heritage varieties, Butchart Gardens is a must-visit destination for rose enthusiasts in the Pacific Northwest. Note: You’ll need to take a ferry to get there; Butchart Gardens is on Vancouver Island. It’s absolutely worth the trip!

 

New Orleans Botanical Garden: New Orleans, Louisiana

Our next stop takes us to the vibrant city of New Orleans, where the New Orleans Botanical Garden awaits. Tucked away in City Park, this enchanting garden features a charming Rose Garden bursting with color and fragrance. Stroll among the blooms, take in the sights and sounds of this unique city, and be sure to visit during the annual Spring Garden Show for even more floral delights.

 

Biltmore Rose Trials: Asheville, North Carolina

Last but certainly not least, we’re heading to the picturesque mountains of North Carolina to attend the Biltmore Rose Trials. Held annually at the historic Biltmore Estate in Asheville, this prestigious event brings together rose breeders, growers, and enthusiasts from around the globe to evaluate and celebrate the newest rose varieties. Wander through the breathtaking gardens, take in the beauty of the estate, and be inspired by the endless possibilities of rose gardening.
