Not Going to Do That

It seems that one of my sayings to live by is “Well, I’m not going to do that next year.” This is especially true of gardening.

Last year I got a seed starter kit with a heater, mat, and lights. I had a bunch of old tomato seeds of various varieties, so I decided to use some of them up. I chose seven varieties and put all the seeds of each variety in a milk carton flat. I figured if I got two to five plants from each variety I would be doing OK.

Well, when those flats got warm from that heating mat, the seeds decided it was time! I ended up with about 200 seedlings! This for a gal who spaces her carrot seeds in the garden so she won’t have to pull any seedlings and throw those precious babies in the compost!

When it was time, I transplanted some of each variety into individual pots in the trays under the grow lights. (The lights are never turned off because I keep a night shift and day shift by switching the trays.) I canvassed everyone I knew everywhere to find homes for the orphans. I found homes for 75—but still had 125 left!

I finally found a volunteer organization who wanted them. Whew!

You know what? I’m not going to do that next year!
